How It All Began – Reg Thompson

In the 1950s Reg Thompson was a diving pioneer and one of the founding members of Hull Branch of the British Sub Aqua Club. Reg is still diving well into his eighties and has been diving for over fifty years. This is his story.

1. A Story of the Beginning

It all began with a chance meeting at Hull Baths where Reg met a young man who was interested in underwater swimming. At the time, there were very few people experimenting with underwater breathing equipment, and those who did were largely self-taught.

2. The Experimental Period

After much saving, the club hired a local swimming pool to experiment with homemade equipment. These early experiments were crude by today’s standards but laid the foundations for everything that followed.

3. The Hydroplane Project

The next project was the construction of an underwater hydroplane. This ambitious effort demonstrated the enthusiasm and ingenuity of the early members, even if success was limited.

4. Spearfishing and Early Sea Dives

Spearfishing soon became popular, and members began venturing into the North Sea. These early sea dives were cold, challenging, and often dangerous, but immensely rewarding.

5. The Compressor – “The Beast”

Eventually, the club acquired a compressor, affectionately known as “The Beast”. This allowed longer and safer dives and marked a major step forward for the branch.

6. Frogmen’s Search Operations

Hull BSAC members were frequently called upon to assist the police and other authorities in underwater search operations, earning a reputation for professionalism and reliability.

7. Flamborough and Beyond

Regular diving at Flamborough Head became a cornerstone of club activity, and the experience gained there opened the door to expeditions further afield.
